Social Media Character Limits 2026: All Platforms, One Table
One table with every platform's limits — X, Instagram, LinkedIn, TikTok and ten more — plus detailed guides for the big ones. Verified August 2026.

I manage content on more platforms than I'd like to admit, and the limits never sit still. TikTok pushed captions from 2,200 to 4,000 characters a while back. X turned length into a paid feature. And every new network shows up with its own rules.
So this page does one job: every limit in one table. The bigger platforms get full guides — every field, the truncation points nobody documents, a live counter built in — while the smaller ones are covered completely right here.
The Big Table
Most platform names link to a detailed guide; the smaller platforms are covered in full right here. All numbers verified August 2026.
| Platform | Post/Caption | Bio | Comment/Reply |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twitter/X | 280 (25K Premium) | 160 | 280 |
| 3,000 | 2,600 (About) | 1,250 | |
| 2,200 | 150 | 2,200 | |
| 63,206 | 101 | 8,000 | |
| TikTok | 4,000 | 80 | 150 |
| YouTube | 5,000 (description) | 1,000 (channel) | 10,000 |
| 500 (pin) | 160 | — | |
| Threads | 500 | 150 | 500 |
| Bluesky | 300 | 256 | 300 |
| Discord | 2,000 (4K Nitro) | 190 | 2,000 |
| Snapchat | 80 (caption) | 80 | 31,000 (chat) |
| 700 (status) | 139 (About) | 65,536 (message) | |
| 40,000 (300 title) | 200 | 10,000 | |
| Twitch | 140 (stream title) | 300 | 500 (chat) |
A few of these need context. Facebook's 63,206 is real, but posts get cut off in the feed long before that. WhatsApp's 65,536 applies to chat messages, not public posts. And Reddit gives you 300 characters for the title before the 40,000-character body even starts.
Platform Guides
The table answers "how much space do I have?" The guides answer everything else: where feeds truncate your text, what counts double, which fields have hidden caps. Each guide also embeds a live counter tuned to that platform's fields, so you can check your draft while you read.
The short-form crowd. The Twitter/X guidewalks through free versus Premium and every profile field, including the link-shortening quirk that catches most people. Threads and Bluesky don't need separate guides — their rulebooks are short. Threads mirrors its 500-character cap for replies and ties its 150-character bio to Instagram. Bluesky posts and replies both stop at 300, the bio runs to 256, and alt text is generous at 2,000 per image.
Visual platforms. Captions do more work here than most people think. The Instagram guide shows where the "more" fold hits and how hashtags affect your count, while TikTok's covers what the expanded caption space is actually good for. Snapchatis its own compact world. Pinterest is the simplest of the bunch: 500 characters per pin description (put keywords in the first 50 or so — it works like a search engine), 100 for pin titles, 500 for boards, 160 for your bio.
Room to write. Facebook and LinkedIn hand you thousands of characters, then truncate hard in the feed — both guides show exactly where. YouTube descriptions are an SEO surface of their own. Reddit splits its limits between title and body, which matters more than it sounds.
Chat and streaming. WhatsApp and Discordmix message caps with profile fields, plus paid tiers that change the math — the guides map all of it. Twitch keeps things leaner: 140 characters for a stream title, 500 per chat message, 300 for your bio, and panel titles cap at 50.
Beyond Social Media
Character limits don't stop at social feeds. If you write marketing copy, the SMS segments guide explains why message number 161 quietly doubles your costs. There are also breakdowns of email subject line length, Google Ads fields, meta descriptions and AI prompt limits across ChatGPT, Claude and friends.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which platform has the highest character limit?
Facebook, at 63,206 characters per public post. WhatsApp technically goes higher with 65,536 per chat message, but that's private messaging, not publishing. Either way, nobody reads a post that long.
Which platform is the strictest?
Snapchat caps captions at 80 characters, which is barely a sentence. For actual posts, X's free tier at 280 and Bluesky's 300 are the tightest among the big networks.
Do URLs count toward the limit?
Depends where you are. X counts every link as exactly 23 characters thanks to its t.co shortener, no matter how long the URL really is. Most other platforms count the full length, so a long link can eat a surprising chunk of your budget.
Do emoji count as one character?
Usually not. Most platforms count Unicode length, and plenty of emoji weigh in at two or more characters — some flag and family emoji cost even more. Paste your text into a counter instead of guessing.
How often do these limits change?
Somewhere on this list, something changes every few months. TikTok raised its caption limit from 2,200 to 4,000, X keeps reshuffling what Premium includes, and newer networks adjust as they grow. That's why the table above carries a verification date — August 2026, as of this update.
